Assistant Professor of English and Director of the learning center

As a professor, I teach composition and literature students in a 4-year private university. The up-side is building relationships with the students and seeing them put to work the materials they’ve learned. As director of the learning center, I organize tutors to work with those who have academic challenges or who want to push to greater levels with their grades. I organize programs that contribute to greater success for the students, and I teach our tutors how to be the extension of the classroom.

Actual Comments from the holder of this Actual Career

How do you feel about this Actual Career?
I absolutely love what I do. The work is extremely satisfying. Sometimes you have to put up with administrative nonsense, but the overall outcome of the work is well worth the downside of budget crunches and ballyhoo! The only other downside is grading all those papers–but, hey, you get summers and holidays off!

Was your degree helpful in your career field?
Yes

In your opinion, what kind of education did you need to get this career?
At least a Master’s Degree to teach in a university. You should have some administration courses to be a director.

Experience, Skills, Specialized Training, Licenses, or Certifications:
This is my 8th year of university teaching and writing center administration. In addition, I have multiple years of private school (elementary and secondary grades) and some journalism experience.

Just one more thing….
